Jazz Band Auditions

Wind Players

  1. Wind players will be expected to play several jazz scales, two etudes, and improvise along with a pre-recorded background track.
  2. The jazz scale sheets can be downloaded here. You need to play Bb, F, C, and G in swing 8th notes, with the quarter note = 120 bpm.
  3. Etudes for 2014 are:

  4. When playing the etudes, you should play the written solo the first time through and improvise using the chords the second time through. Improvising requires you to make up a part that sounds “jazzy” when playing with the background tracks.

Piano

  1. Blues scales – two octaves (two hands): Bb – F – C – G (played in swing 8th notes. Quarter note = 120bpm)
  2. Etude
  3. Chord “comping” with background recording to “Satin Doll” one time through the tune. Listen to recording “with your instrument” to get ideas for rhythms to play.

Drum Set

  1. Students will be asked to demonstrate the following styles: Play 16 measures each of teh following styles at appropriate tempos:
    1. Swing - medium tempo (quarter = 120bpm)
    2. Swing - Fasttempo (quarter = 172bpm)
    3. Latin - medium tempo (quarter = 128bpm)
    4. Rock - medium tempo (quarter = 96bpm)
  2. Etude
  3. Play along with the tune "Hava a Nice Day" (be sure to record yourself with the track "without drums"). Listen to the recording "with drums" to get ideas on what to play.
